Risograph Animation

03 _2023

Description

In March of 2023, I took Kelli Anderson’s risograph animation workshop. By printing out each frame of an animation with a risograph machine, layering colors on top of each other, and then piecing the frames back together, she was able to create a nostalgic, grainy effect with lots of variation and imperfections that would be difficult to recreate digitally. I wanted to  highlight the strengths of this technique - the layering of colors, the offsetting, the satisfying gradients, etc. So I decided to create a looping animation of a biker riding under streetlamps that wipe away the blue layer of “night” to reveal the pink layer below. The printing process transformed the animation, and really finished the piece. I’m very excited to play around with this technique more, so stay tuned!
